What does a cervical smear test involve?
A cervical smear test, also known as a Pap smear, is a simple and quick procedure that involves the following steps:
1. Preparation: You will be asked to lie down on an examination table, usually with your feet together and knees apart, to make the cervix accessible for examination.
2. Cervical Examination: The consultant gynaecologist will gently insert a speculum into the vagina to open it slightly, allowing access to the cervix.
3. Cell Sample Collection: Using a small brush or spatula, the consultant gynaecologist will collect a sample of cells from the cervix. This process is generally painless and takes only a few seconds.
4. Specimen Analysis: The collected cell sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. There, it is evaluated for any abnormalities, changes in cell structure, or the presence of high-risk HPV strains.
5. Results: Once the laboratory analysis is complete, your results are then sent to the consultant gynaecologist, typically within approximately 10 days. These results will indicate whether any abnormalities were detected during the test and the consultant will contact you with these results and next steps, if necessary.
Cervical smear tests are a vital tool for the early detection of cervical abnormalities, helping to prevent cervical cancer. It's recommended that individuals undergo regular cervical smear tests as part of their routine healthcare to ensure their cervical health.

At Newry Private Clinic, the cost of a cervical smear test is £260. This fee covers the complete test as well as a consultant-led response and treatment plan. This means that if the test results indicate the need for any action, there's no waiting on referrals. Our consultant gynaecologists are readily available to provide guidance and treatment, ensuring your health is a top priority. Your well-being is our focus, and we aim to provide comprehensive care without unnecessary delays.
It is generally recommended to wait at least 3 months between your last smear test and the next one. This interval allows your cervical cells to regenerate sufficiently for accurate testing.
However, it's important to note that the frequency of necessary smear tests can vary from person to person and is influenced by factors such as previous test results and individual risk factors. Your doctor will advise you on the most appropriate timing for your specific situation. Regular consultations with your healthcare provider are crucial for determining the right schedule for your cervical smear tests, ensuring the best possible care for your cervical health.
If the results of your cervical smear test indicate the presence of cancer, there's no need to worry. At Newry Private Clinic, our consultant gynaecologist, who is an expert in this situation, will be your guiding light. They are uniquely qualified to plan the next steps in your treatment journey.

Encountering a medical challenge can be a frightening and distressing experience. I took my mum to The Newry Clinic where all her worries (and mine) were dealt with professionally, calmly and sensitively. The appointment system was efficient and immediate, the welcome from all staff was reassuring and personalised, and the medical consultant had expertise and patient care in spades. Due to the current health care context in Ireland we found ourselves pursuing the private route for the first time, it was a pleasant and reassuring experience at The Newry Clinic.

Had my dad at the clinic recently for Microsuction, fantastic service from Nurse McGarry and all the staff in the clinic. He felt so comfortable and enjoyed his experience, leaving the clinic with a smile on his face!

I went to the gynaecologist in this clinic after attending one locally with an ongoing problem for over 10 years. In one single visit I was told the problem and given a prescription there and then. I'm forever thankful to the doctor as I was being treated for the wrong thing for years.

I dont usually write reviews, but for Mr. David McCaul, I owe you one! I have had 2 encounters with Mr McCaul now, once last year to fix a perforated ear drum and a few weeks back to have a procedure on my throat. He has helped me in many ways, fixing my eardrum and giving me my hearing back to 100% volume. if anyone has ENT issues, and need a diagnosis or even just a bit of reassurance, This is one Gentleman that I would give the highest recommendation for. Thanks Again to Newry private Clinic and Mr McCaul.
